Revit To PS New Model
- We do not recommend that you import a new Revit model fresh into ProtaStructure.
- It is highly recommended you start the model in ProtaStructure to ensure an accurate structural model.
- For more details you can refer to the attached guide ducument.
ProtaBIM Installation
Firstly, install ProtaBIM in the same laptop or PC where Revit is installed.
Latest & previous versions of ProtaBIM can be obtained here : Downloads Installation
- Double-click on the downloaded ProtaBIM exe file.
- Choose all default options to install.
- When you first start Revit after ProtaBIM installation, you maybe prompted a warning "Security Add-in for ProtaBIM", click "Always Load" to confirm.
- ProtaBIM for Revit only works if "Structural Discipline" is installed and selected during installation of Revit.
- During Autodesk Revit installation, the installer may prompt for the disciplines. Structural must be checked.
- The plugin will not be visible for “Architectural” or other disciplines.
- Please make sure that the computer is using Revit with structural configuration.
- When you install ProtaBIM, it automatically registers itself for Revit.
- DLL files are installed on “C:\Program Files(x86)\Prota\ProtaBIMXX” by default.
- “.addin” manifest file is created under “C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\Year number”
Import from ProtaStructure to Revit (1st Time & Update)
- In Revit, you should create a New Project using one of these template file:
- "ProtaStructure_Metric_2024.rte" (using Revit 2024, ProtaBIM2024 & ProtaStructure 2024) or
- "ProtaStructure_Metric_2023.rte" (using Revit 2023, ProtaBIM2022 & ProtaStructure 2022) or
- "ProtaStructure_Metric_2021.rte" (using Revit 2021, ProtaBIM2021 & ProtaStructure 2021) or
- "ProtaStructure_Metric_2020.rte" (For ProtaBIM2019 & ProtaStructure 2019) or
- "ProtaStructure_Metric_2019.rte" (For ProtaBIM2019 & ProtaStructure 2019) or
All related Revit families are pre-loaded in this template. Otherwise import will fail. This step is vital.
- It is located under “My Documents\ProtaLib\Templates”
- Go to “ProtaBIM 20xx” Ribbon tab on Revit toolbar > Select Import form ProtaStructure
- Select a ProtaStructure project by clicking "..." and browse to the desired Project Folder > Select the “.Prota” file of the Project Folder > Open
- A preview of the model will be shown. Click Next
- If it is 1st import, then "First time import" will be auto-selected.
- If it is 2nd or subsequent import, then "Update existing model" will be auto-selected
Checking option Import slabs by interior points will avoid slab trimming and overlapping with other member issues. Use this option only if the first import is unsatisfactory.
Guidelines on using this option :
- Always uncheck this option when importing PS to Revit.
- If after import and inspecting the Revit model, you find it unsatisfactory, such as slab overlapping with beams, column – then consider checking this option.
- This is a more complex option, expect some wrong detection of slab deleted when you export back to ProtaStructure. If you are sure that slab is not deleted, then just ignore those erroneous warning.
- Select the structural objects to import > Click Start
- In the mapping dialog, ProtaStructure Sections (Left pane) will be automatically mapped to the available Revit Families (Middle pane), creating a Mapping List (Right pane) for sections successfully mapped.
Red items : Available but not mapped
Green items : Available and mapped
- Red sections shown under ProtaStructure Sections (Left pane) indicates that section cannot be mapped. Hence it should be mapped manually by :
- Select a section under ProtaStructure Section
- Select a section under Revit Families (listed according Revit Family Instance Name)
- Click "+" symbol (Add to Mapping List) and it will added under Mapping List (right pane)
- If a mapped section is wrong and you would like to change it :
- Select the already mapped section under Mapping List (right pane)
- Click X symbol (Remove from Mapping List)
- Remap the section as described above
- Click Start > the import will begin. On completion, Model Import Summary will appear listing down elements successfully imported.
- Close the dialog to return to Revit
After the dialog is closed, Revit continues to regenerate members. This can take time for large models.
Export to ProtaStructure
A model imported from ProtaStructure can be edited in Revit and then exported back to ProtaStructure.
- In Revit, go to ProtaBIM ribbon > select Export to ProtaStructure
- In the Open Project dialog, choose the "Data Folder" and then select the same project name (which was used in Import) > pick OK
- The Map Sections menu will appear. Revit Families (left pane) are automatically mapped to ProtaStructure Sections (middle pane) and shown in Mapping List (right pane)
Red items : Available but not mapped
Green items : Available and mapped
- Red sections shown under Revit Families (left pane) indicates that section cannot be mapped. Hence it should be mapped manually by :
- Select a section under Revit Families
- Select a section under ProtaStructure Sections
- If the sections listed are not available, you an expose more ProtaStructure sections :
- Click on Column / Beam / Frame Section symbol > ProtaStructure Section Manager will be launched.
- Select the correct country section Database > Pick the Section > Select > OK
- The pick section will now be added in the list under ProtaStructure Sections (the newly added section will be in red
- Select the newly added section
- Click "+" symbol (Add to Mapping List) and it will added under Mapping List (right pane)
- If a mapped section is wrong and you would like to change it :
- Select the already mapped section under Mapping List (right pane)
- Click X symbol (Remove from Mapping List)
- Remap the section as described above
- Click OK > The dialog will close automatically to return to Revit environment.
A subfolder called " RevitData" will be created in the ProtaStructure project folder of the same project
- Once the model is exported in Revit, you can open the same project in ProtaStructure (if it is not already opened)
- Go to ProtaStruture > Ensure the same project is opened (i.e. same project chosen in Revit in "Export to ProtaStructure" above)
- Go to the BIM ribbon, choose Revit Import
- In Import menu, Pick structural objects to import > click Import
- After a successful import, the Move Member to Axis follow by Build Model Check dialog will appear. If you wish to run it, pick Start then Close.
- If you switch to a 3D view > To to Review Tab > click BIM Integration Status will color code which member(s) is new, changed, deleted & unchanged.
The ON/OFF toggle of BIM Integration Status is in the BIM ribbon :
